How does insect farming work?
Unlike traditional livestock, farmed insects are typically raised indoors in climate-controlled facilities, often in stacked trays or crates to save space. They are fed on plant-based substrates such as grain by-products or vegetable scraps, and complete their life cycle — from egg to harvestable adult or larva — in just a few weeks. Once harvested, the insects are cleaned and then either:
- Blanched and frozen or dried, and sold whole
- Dried and ground into insect flour
- Further processed into protein extracts or other food additives

Why is insect farming considered more sustainable?
